The Judah monument at Sacramento, which was started and completed by W. Kirkbride, chief engineer of the Southern Pacific Company, was dedicated at a meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers on April 26, 1930, and the completed Monument was unveiled in February, 1931.
It bears this inscription: THAT THE WEST MAY REMEMBER THEODORE DEHONE JUDAH PIONEER, CIVIL ENGINEER AND TIRELESS ADVOCATE OF A GREAT TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD AMERICA'S FIRST THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC COMPANY, WHO IN 1930 WERE CARRYING ON THE WORK HE BEGAN IN 1860.
Fittingly, the monument is made of massive granite boulders from the high Sierra Nevada, the snowy summits of which can be seen from the capital city on a clear day.
It bears in bronze a medallion of the engineer, together with a brief statement of his services in organizing and locating the Central Pacific Railroad, now a part of the Southern Pacific System.
Interests will always center around the men who performed the work, and therefore we give here some account of their origin, their character, the incidents of their career, and the life they lived.
THEODORE DEHONE JUDAH On the green lawn in front of the station building of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the city of Sacramento, the capitol of California, stands one of the few monuments erected in America to the memory of an engineer.

IN A HISTORY of the building of the Pacific Railroad, some mention must be made of the personalities of the men who originated and carried to completion a work that was the outstanding achievement of their time, notwithstanding the fact that the railroad itself is the most important element in the story.
However Donald’s life changed unexpectedly when his wife died of tuberculosis in 1856 and by 1861 his business had been bankrupted and he and his four children were living in a less salubrious part of town.
Donald had also been a director of a property investment company and the lessons of our modern times are a repeat of the problems that investors have encountered since time immemorial.
His father was a shoemaker and there was a decided lack of opportunities in the northern Highlands and sometime in the late 1830’s he moved to Edinburgh – no doubt seeking new opportunities!
